Piercing Debate

You know how there are things you never actually think about before you have kids?

Well this was one of those for me. Before having the Peanut I didn't think about piercing ears and earrings and all that jazz. I mean my parents had my ears pierced when I was a couple of months old and I'm glad I have a lot of nice pairs of earrings and love them, but it was never something I thought about when it came to having a baby.

Now that the Peanut is here and the Peanut is a girl, family members have been asking "So when are you getting her ears pierced?". My parents have already bought her a really nice pair of gold ones from Portugal and my grandparents sent a beautiful pair as well for her. All my little girl cousins and my sister have pierced ears.

I guess it's a cultural thing and the hubby and I mulled it over and thought about it.

I did a lot of research and talked to the Peanut's pediatrician about the cons and risks and how safe it really is. We did quite a bit of soul searching and thought about the reasons why we'd would want this done or not and if this was something that the Peanut would be happy about or not at a later date.

I was wondering what you all thought about it. Do your little girls have their ears pierced or would you rather they make that decision when they are older?

Coming from a European background on both sides of the family it was expected that I pierce Sam's ears, at least before her baptism so she could wear the earrings that my inlaws purchased, godparents purchased and a family friend also purchased. But I didn't do it. To me it was a decision she could do when she's older and at such a young age (6 mths) I really didn't want to have to take care of cleaning her ears everyday and turning the posts and also I know when I wear my post earrings at night the backs of them poke me.

No cultural pressure for us, but I have to say on a personal level I'm not a big fan of pierced ears on babies.
Their tiny ears are just so perfect naturally.
Plus I can't imagine how much it would hurt the poor little things.
with all the needles and immunizations they have to go through in the first couple of years I would hate to add more unnecessarily.
